avi.NET is a powerful video converter that creates AVI files from MPEG files. Since it supports all kinds of MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 files, including TS, VOB and MPG, it can be used to convert VCD, SVCD, DVD, and HDTV movies to AVI videos.
To me, avi.NET looks like a tool meant to be used more by professionals and experienced users than by novices, and that’s because it offers a lot of advanced settings whose purpose won’t be easily understood by beginners. The purpose and the effects of these settings aren't clearly explained and the tool doesn't come with any help system, instructions or documentations. On the other hand, it has plenty of advantages too. One of them is the fact that it is free. Another is the fact that it allows experienced users to tweak and control a lot of parameters and details of the output file. In order to create AVI files that are fully compatible with all kinds of players and devices, including DVD players, avi.NET uses the popular XviD and DivX codecs. Unfortunately, if you want to use XviD for the conversion, you have to use exactly the 1.2.2 version of this codec, as other versions will simply not work. Anyway, that’s the case only with DivX, as with the DivX codecs I haven’t encountered any such problems.
In conclusion, avi.NET is a handy and reliable video converter that will surely satisfy experienced users that require having control over every little detail of the conversion process and of the output file.
